How Much We Spend on Gasoline

Published April 28, 2026 at 2:57 PM · News Releases and Bulletins

We spend a lot of our incomes on gasoline. Some of us are required to travel a bit for our jobs and that increases our fuel spending. Statistics say where you live can add up to twice as much as others pay each month for gasoline. A longer commute is considered to be the biggest — dare we say — “driver” of those costs.

The highest monthly costs are in Wyoming where drivers pay around $279 a month. New York drivers pay the least at $132 per month.

The statistics in this story come from the Federal Highway Administration. They are based on fuel prices and travel distances on April 15th of this year with a milage rate of 25.6 miles per gallon.

Eight PIA Western Alliance states are in the top 25 most expensive states. Two, New Mexico and California are in the top 10 with Idaho, Nevada, Arizona and Hawaii bunched up from 11 through 16.

Montana is number 20 and Oregon ranks as the 23rd most expensive state for fuel for driving. The PIA Western Alliance state of Washington sits at 34th and Alaska is 38th.
